“Excuse me, please.”
Miss Latimer was having one of those mornings. Her kids had been awkward little sods when she left them with the childminder. She had then set off at a pace in the car. Coming back this way to here, she had managed to get up to 50mph, which wasn’t ideal but she snagged the last parking place in the tiny crappy carpark at the College.
Students were lining the edge of the reception area. Chatting and causing a bit of a jam. She needed to get down the corridor to her room. As she reached a bottleneck at the beginning of the corridor, she tapped the biggest youth in the middle of his back with the sharp edges of the folders she was carrying. No movement. She could feel the queue building up behind her. This was another Mock exam week. What a bloody pleasure again. How many times did they have to do this rigmarole? The kids were getting fed up and some days mutiny was in the air. Today she had a packed schedule and things were not always about THEM.
Back towards the entrance there was a kerfuffle. It sounded like men. She turned. Two policemen were making their way down her way. Down the way Miss Brown the school secretary was pointing. The snitch.
Boy, now she had to think of something quick. She looked between the big youth’s legs and saw a lad lying on the floor with no shoes nor socks on. His huge size 12 feet, splayed out. Yup that was Tom Ward and what was he doing now?
The policemen were moving down the corridor and soon would be at the same spot. Perhaps someone would delay them with a proper crime. Something that was a non-speeding incident.
With a grunt she squeezed between the youth’s legs and lay herself level with the pale right- angled smelly feet.
“Miss Latimer, can you spare us a moment please?” The nearest policeman was leaning over her as she kept her eyes closed. She could hear the students behind him sniggering. Little buggers. They would dob her in it no problem as no doubt they had seen her crawl into position. She wondered if she could act unconscious. Did you breathe fast or slow?
“Miss Latimer, can you respond please? We believe you have been observed doing far more than the speed limit outside the College. We need to ask you some questions.”
Miss Latimer opened her eyes as she heard the police shout for everyone to stand back as they urgently worked their radios. A circle of blood was making a slow dark circle from the back of Tom Ward’s head. Spreading out across the floor. Students who were in the queue behind were now screaming, and pushing against each other, some aiming their phones to video the event.
Miss Latimer rolled away. Stood up.
She stepped over the boy and headed for the classroom.
